The Petals in my Bouquet

Rekayi Tangwena Children's Home

As I mentioned in a previous post, in December I went to South Africa for my friend’s daughter’s wedding which was  beautiful. But, before leaving, I decided I would buy a small portable loom as a gift for the Rekayi Tangwena Children’s Home which I visited last year in September. I wanted to write a few more thoughts regarding the Children's Home as it is a matter heavy on my heart!

When I went in September, I took some of the children together with the director of the home and the Social Worker to the weaving cooperative that we work with and introduced them to weaving. We wanted the home to be aware of other options for children, especially those who are not necessarily strong in academics. So, the small loom made its way to Zimbabwe and the children were very happy and excited to learn how to use it. I spent time working with Yolanda and Talent because I believe that they were able to comprehend and they could then teach the other children. When I think of where they fit in my theme of Imbali, I see these two girls and the other chidren in this home as those small petals on my flowers that add beauty and strength to the bouquet of flowers.

Since coming back I have followed up on these children by making phone calls and my heart has been blessed and overjoyed to hear how they are thriving and teaching other children. These children remind me of where I have come from and how, who I am today, has been a work that sometimes I have felt involved the whole community. Different people played a part to contribute to where I am today and so by “adopting” Rekayi Tangwena Children Children’s Home and teaching them weaving feels like playing my part in giving what I have to the children so that their lives are enriched through the experience. Talent and Yolanda and many other children bring out the beauty of my bouquet of flowers and I am grateful that I am able to add some value to their lives.

For those of you who contacted me to help with this initiative, I thank you! For those who are still interested in supporting the Rekayi Tangwena Children’s Home, please send me an email at  imbaliwebsite@gmail.com
